I am trying to change my alternator but I cant figure out how to loosen the belt.How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?There is a tensioner. It looks like an arm with a smooth pulley on it that does not look to serve any purpose. Put a wrench on the nut on the tensioner and push to the right it is basically a big spring.

Look at all the pulleys on the belt it should be a smaller one with hole in the middle. If you take a 3/8 inch ratchet it should fit in that hole. You push that down with a lot of pressure and you'll see the belt loosen on the rest of the pulleys. Sometimes it takes two people as you have to push down really hard for some cars and while you push down the other person has to slide the belt off the pulleys. Good luck
