I wouldn't even get a new unit - get the blown one fixed. They are pretty much infinitely repairable. Check out the yellow pages under auto-electrics etc. There are people in most areas who specialise in just alternators, dynamos and magnetos etc.

They are only a real pain to change on some modern cars where they are buried under other components.

The one that moves when you push the belt in is the tensioner (the rest are stationary). Some tensioners have a hex, a square tab or a square hole that you grab with a socket and ratchet(or breaker bar), a crescent wrench, or a 1/2 inch square drive breaker bar or ratchet handle respectively. Check to make sure there is a pulley diagram before you remove the old belt. If there isn't, draw one because it can be confusing sometimes. Insert the correct tool and pull away from the belt on the circumference of the pulley. Flip the belt off. Then reinstall the new one.How to change alternator / release serpentine tension on tensioner pulley 92 LeBaron Conv 3.0L V6?your alternator pulley itself might be the tension pulley. take the bolts off the alternator and wiring and put new alternator in. you need a big pry bar and probably another person. hook up the belt and have someone pry on the bar and alternator pulley to put tension on the belt, then at the same time tighten the bolts on your alternator

But I would still get the Chilton's.I need to know how to change alternator on a 1994 ford probe?Alternators are pretty simple... I've done them on a Probe GT but you never said which probe, pretty much the same either way though...

    -Disconnect neg. battery cable

-Raise and support the passenger side of the car

    -Remove the passenger wheel

-Remove the plastic splash sheld on the passenger side, few screw fasteners and 10mm bolts

    -Remove the alternator belt

--Locate the idler pulley (the one that is JUST a pulley, nothing else)

    --Loosen the pulley bolt

--Turn the long bolt going through the pulley bracket to loosen the belt

    --Remove the belt

-Remove the wire harness from the front side of the alternator

-Remove the ground wire from the front side of the alternator (it's a nut that should be covered with a plastic shield)

-Remove the 2(maybe 3?) bolts holding the alternator

-Remove the alternator from underneath the car

Install is just reverse of that. Getting it out can be a pain, I think on my old GT I took the A/C compressor off of it's bracket and supported it to the side so that I had a little more room. • How to change an alternator on a 1996 Ford Taurus GL?

Remove the serpentine belt by detensioning the tensioner pulley. It's a tight squeeze, but it can be done without loosening the engine mounts. Disconnect the connector at the alternator, and loosen and remove the eyelet for the positive battery cable. Unbolt the alternator from the bracket and remove it. Install the new alternator, and reconnect the connector and battery cable eyelet, and pull the tensioner pulley back and reinstall the belt. There should be a belt routing diagram under the hood to help you out with this step. This would also be a good time to change the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley. How to change an Alternator for a 2004 Mini Cooper? They designed the damn car around the alternator! Just like the Porsche 911 Carrera...the sparks were designed with the car around it!!

Save yourself aggravation...take it to a masochist mechanic....they like pain. How to change an Alternator for a 2004 Mini Cooper? The engine compartment is so tight dude...major p.i.t.a.

It should look something like this (this is a shot of the turbo engine)

    http://www.roadfly.com/new-cars/wp-conte…

First off: Disconnect the positive terminal on the BATTERY! SERIOUSLY!

See that metal piece with the vents connected with the serpentine belt? That's the alternator. The thing right above it that's depressing the serpentine belt is the tensioner. Release the tension on the tensioner (or remove it); remove the serpentine belt. Remove the bolts holding the alternator in place with a torque wrench and metric sockets. Replace the alternator also reconnecting the alt to battery cables. Torque the alternator bolts to factory specs. Re-guide the serpentine belt in the factory configuration removing tension from the tensioner (or reinstalling the tensioner). Voila...it's done.

But...the thing I'm not telling you is that because the engine compartment is so cramped on a mini cooper you ALMOST always have to work on the engine from beneath, meaning you have to remove the plastic shrouds and pretty much do everything upside down if you don't have a lift. You can do it with ramps but you'll be on your back 100% of the time. Hence...P.I.T.A.

How to change an alternator, or starter?

I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier 2.5 liter 4 cyl. We replaced the battery and it still won't crank. Just wanna know how to change the alternator or starter, and what the prices are to replace them. If anything, i'll take it to the shop, but I used to be a mechanic back in my 20's so I just wanted to find out what I may have to do.How to change an alternator, or starter?Wow, how old are you that they didn't have starters when you were in your 20's? LOL

Seriously though, if it wouldn't crank over with a new battery, you don't need an alternator. Check both your battery cables at both ends. Or, if it's not making any noise at all, make sure you're getting power to your starter solenoid when you turn the ignition key to %26quot;start%26quot;. If you need a starter, remove negative cable from battery, remove wires from starter, remove starter from engine. Reverse to install. Most auto parts stores will test your starter for free if you bring it in (bench test), to be sure that's it.How to change an alternator, or starter?Check the starter and ignition relays. Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?

I'm at work and my 1998 Rav4's alternator belt just snapped when i got back from lunch. I purchased the belt already but I'm not quite sure how to replace it. I was told there is a Tensioner pulley somewhere that I can turn to release some tension but I'm not sure which one it is. If you have a how-to or diagram or any information please help. ThanksDoes anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?Theyre not hard to replace but you are going to need a wrench to retract the belt tensioner. There is a diagram usually under your hood for the belt route. but the tensioner pulls back off the the belt so there is slack on the belt so you can pull out the old one and slip in the new one being sure to follow the same route as the old one. The only problem is your going to have to get yourself a wrench to do this.

http://www.amazon.com/Summit-SUM-900035-Does anyone know how to change an Alternator belt for a 1998 Rav4?It requires a serpentine belt tool. first take note of the routing of the belt, raise the car up and remove the shield covering the crank pulley, put a 19mm socket on the tool, find the tensioner toward the top of the engine, put the tool on the fixed tensioner casting (its a 19mm hex cast right into the tensioner) (do this from the bottom) and pull down. this will take the tension off the belt and allow you to slip the belt off the waterpump pulley. let the bar go back up and the whole belt will fall off. replacing is reverse, its tricky the first time......even the second or third. good luck! oh and dont try to drive it to the repair shop if you cant get it back on.....the waterpump wont be working so you'll risk engine damage by overheating, the power steering wont work, the battery wont charge, and as if it matters...the A/C wont work either!

Bought a used Alternator now im tring to switch them outHow do you change an alternator 98 jeep?Used? Unless it has less than 20,000 miles on it, I would seriously reconsider getting a new one.

How good is your battery?, If you are going to use the battery that went with your old alternator, then I would suggest you get a new one, otherwise you could kill both the battery and the alternator.

Because you have a Jeep, the alternator is conveniently located in front of you when you open the hood.

Because I don't have all the numebrs in front of me, i will suggest going to an online repair manual or going to your library and renting one. In there, it will tell you how to change out the old and install the new.

How to change an alternator on a ford focus diesel?

I am surprised a failed alternator isn't allowing it to start ? but it may be a dead short and flattening the battery ( diode failure) You will have to jump start it but if battery itself is now dead this can become a problem as a dead battery can affect starting by dropping voltage too much etc and acting as a power restrictor in circuit thus not enough voltage to crank engine even when revving the engine on supplying car.

these units are expensive sadly but rarely fail and are not a home repair item.

How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?

The old one snapped while driving. Will I need a belt tensioner? It shouldn't be too hard, but I can't figure out what I need to loosen to get the new one on. Will I need to remove the fan belt to get the alternator belt on? Any advice would be really helpful. How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?I get a kick out of these kids who think that every vehicle ever made has one single Serpentine belt. They probably couldn't adjust a set of points if they were stranded in the Yukon and their life depended on it.

You will need to remove any belts that are mounted in front of the Alternator belt. As far as the Alternator, those are easy. There are 2 bolts holding it in, one short one, and one long one, The long one is the one the Alternator pivots on. The short one keeps it from pivoting by locking it in place, although both should be tightened when you are done. Just loosen both, and push the Alternator towards the engine.

You probably have at least a Power Steering belt in front, and usually if you have Air Conditioning, that will be in the back on yours, if I remember correctly. Either of those are usually a little more complicated, as they have more than 2 bolts you have to loosen. The Power Steering has one on the back (a nut actually) that a lot of people don't notice.

    Here are some pictures that might help;

    http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/m

    http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/m

Notice that the Power Steering has 3 bolts right in front of the pump, but those hold the pump to the bracket, so leave those alone. You want to loosen the 2 nuts/bolts towards the engine side, that hold the bracket to the engine, and the one in back, and move the pump and front bracket at the same time. The back bracket doesn't move like the front one does.

To get the belt off all the way, you will have to get it over the fan, which is easiest if you start on one side of the fan, and work your way towards the other side of the fan, one blade at a time. Put the new belts back over the fan the same way, except in reverse.

Once you get all the belts in place and on the pulleys, you need to move the device back away from the engine to tighten the belt. Be careful with the Power Steering especially, when using a pry bar, as the outside is the fluid reservoir. That bends easily, and can cause a leak if you do bend it.

Once you get the belt tight enough, tighten one of the lockdown bolts, which are mounted over a slot. Then tighten the rest, including the pivot bolts. Start the engine up, making sure that no one else is standing by the front of the car, and make sure they're still on and tight after you shut the engine off.How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban? You don't need to loosen anything. There should be a drawing of the belt route on the fan shrout. It should have picture of where the belt go. All you need is 3/4%26quot; socket and a long breaker bar.

    1. You route all the belt to all the parts it is suppose to, power steering, a/c, alternator, main pulley, smog pump and of course the tensioner is last.

    2. You stick the socket on the tensioner bolt and pull onto it while placing the belt over the tensioner.

Once the belt is on the tensioner, you are done! Making sure the belt go onto the other part properly. You can then start the engine. How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?you only need a new belt tensioner if the old one has no tension on it or it vibrates too much when the engine is running, you will need either a 3/8 or 1/2 breaker bar, the tensioner arm will have a square hole to place the bar socket into, use the bar as a lever to slide the new belt in.

On my 95 Buick Regal 3.8L, it takes about 3 minutes because the alternator is right on top and you only have to remove 2 bolts.
