My Step Dad's car will not start and wont jumpstart either we have had a guy from some garage come out to have a look and he said it's the alternator now we are wanting to know how to take the alternator off our self and how much are they ?How to change an alternator on a ford focus diesel?Buy a haynes manual, it will give you step by step instructions, alternators aren't cheap, they can be got from ebay, but parts usually aren't too expensive from Ford main dealers, I usually go to ford myself, at least if theres a problem it's easily returned.How to change an alternator on a ford focus diesel?if you cant get a workshop manual form a library you can get a Haynes from Halfords. this will show you how .it is fiddly but easily doable. just take care with battery and wire connections. !!
I am surprised a failed alternator isn't allowing it to start ? but it may be a dead short and flattening the battery ( diode failure) You will have to jump start it but if battery itself is now dead this can become a problem as a dead battery can affect starting by dropping voltage too much etc and acting as a power restrictor in circuit thus not enough voltage to crank engine even when revving the engine on supplying car.
these units are expensive sadly but rarely fail and are not a home repair item.
