How much does it cost to replace an Alternator?

I drive an '87 Thunderbird and recently, in this change to cold weather, it's been extremely difficult to get it to start. However, the battery is less than 3 weeks old. Could the alternator be the issue? What's the price range for a new one, and is it possible to have it repaied/replaced with a used one?How much does it cost to replace an Alternator?Could be the alternator-The car though uses the battery to start up and the alternator powers it while its cranked-If the alt goes bad then the battery has to run everything and will die faster-You can look up an alternator on any local auto parts website, and with the age of your car it should be pretty simple to switch it out.How much does it cost to replace an Alternator?I'd use common sense and call a few shops and get some quotes. I doubt it's the alternator if it %26quot;starts hard%26quot;. I'd get the vehicle to a reputable repair facility and have a professional have a look. Otherwise you will just be wasting time and money swapping parts out trying to fix it yourself. How much does it cost to replace an Alternator?local auto parts store like autozone advanced will check it for free a new one i think is 100-150

  • How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?

I know with proper maintenance it could last a very long time. Its already at 250,xxx miles and is running good still. Changed the muffler, alternator, have oil changes and more. I just want to know true opinons of how long the car can last. How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?Well, you are doing pretty well now. Are you burning any oil? If not, just keep changing it every 3-5k and make sure you get the timing belt changed (if applicable) and I bet you can get another 100K. Just baby the baby. How long will my 1989 toyota celica st last?I agree with everything PhilGee said. Provided that you aren't burning much oil (1 quart every 1,500 miles or less is not good, for example). Also, if your engine seals are good, that helps. My aunt has a 1997 Toyota Rav4 4 cylinder with 4wd that she stopped driving after 318,000 miles. But you'll have to decide how many miles is %26quot;far enough%26quot; for you.

Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?

99 Jeep XJ, my drive belt squeals something awful when my AC runs, I recently changed my alternator and in the process discovered how to adjust the drive belt... so I tightened it to where I thought it would stop squealing when AC is on, it is worse.... I can't beleive tightening it doesn't fix the problem, I need a new belt don't I?Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?You could have over tightened it. If it is all run off one belt, try taking some vaseline and VERY CAREFULLY put it on the belt when its running. If it stops squeaking then yes a new belt will likely stop the squeaking. If not you need to investigate your belt tensioner, and idler if you have one, the pulley on your power steering pump and you ac clutch. One of them is most likely squeaking from a bad bearing.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?It might be the tensioner or the a/c compressor clutchDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?Maybe, or an new A/C compressor.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?You surely need a new belt, but I would check the pully and tensioner to make sure you don't have a bearing out.Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?if over tighten you wil do more damadge to costly componentsDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?If the belt is truly tightened correctly, then yes you do.

Double check to make sure it didnt slip a bit as you were tightening it, I am not familiar with your particular application but I cant believe it doesnt have an automatic tensioner, is it positioned properly?Drive belt squeals when A/C is running...?not necessarily so try rubbing a bar of soap on the belt (with the motor not running or spray some WD40 on the belt with the motor running --- KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAR OF THE FAN OR YOU MAY LOSE A FINGER OR WORSE -- GOOD LUCK and happy motoringDrive belt squeals when A/C is running...?I would agree with KOOLSTER=D, you need to be sure the belt has proper tension, but not too much tension. Over tightening it can cause damage to your accessories and could be the reason for the squeal.

How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?

I have a Toyota Corolla 2004 LE edition. In order not to run into problems, how often should I get the Alternator and Timing Belt changed? Every 5 years? I know this seems like a very obselete question, but I want to make sure my car is in good shape. It currently has 42,290 miles on it and it's 3 years old.How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?Timing belts are 80k-100k miles depending on driving conditions.

    Alternator Belt ....???

Toyota I can only assume is like Nissan, Honda, %26amp; VW in that they check belts and hoses as part of their maintenance every 10k miles. Those would be changed as needed but at 42,290k miles your car would have gone through a lot if it already needs these items changed but every car has its kwirks. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed? The recommended time to change your timing belt is every 60,000 miles. If you wait until it breaks, you will be replacing an engine instead. Since replacing the timing belt entails remove all of the other belts first, it would be a great time to replace the accessory belts at the same time. Rack time is expensive. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?Do you have the 4 or 6?

A good way to tell is look at it, if it has small cracks or glazing it needs to be replaced. The cracks will be in the V side not the smooth side.

If you have a 4 cyl then you have a timing chain, the V6 has a belt, if it breaks there is no motor damage that is not a interference motor. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?if you have a 4 cylinder engine you have a serpentine belt and it should be changed about every 50k or as needed, and 4 cyl. has a timing chain not a belt. if you have a v6 then you have two drive belts that should be changed 50k or as needed, and the timing belt should be changed every 90k or as needed. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?Once a yearHow often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?Starting in 1998, Corollas went to a timing CHAIN. Theoretically, you should never have to change it,

The accessory belt (serpentine) should be inspected every oil change to be safe and changed when cracks appear. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed? They dont make a 6 cyl corolla, and corolla's use a timing chain from 98 on up.How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed? The local Toyota shop recommends changing the timing belt every 60k in hot climates like Texas. The timing belt (not to be confused with the alternator/water pump/compressor belt) is covered and thus is not readibly viewable. If the timing belt breaks, all the valves are bent in a second and the engine has to be rebuilt. Is is about a $3000 job vs. a $100 belt. How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?omg seems like no one read the instruction booklet

there is a part on the book talking to mantenience in that part will tell you when you have change it and corrolla dont use timing belt, they use timming chain that you never need to change( in 10years will stretch only 3/16 inch) then change it

for the alt belt look for some scratchs and loose parts, or cracks if you look one of these then you have to change it

I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?

The battery seems to drain after about 200 miles. I tried looking it up but with no luck. At first I thought it might be the alternator but every other one I had to go bad just did suddenly and there was nothing to do but change out the alternator.

How do you determine if the battery is adequate?I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?i own a repair shop, and you do this by the cranking amps it has built in to it,,but yours sounds like a bad alternator draining the battery because the size of the battery wont make it drain in that few of driving miles, you need to take it to any auto zone and have them check it while its in the car, they do this for free and then you,ll know for sure what it is making it go down,,good luck,i hope this help,s.I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?like dodge man, the cold cranking amps should be on a lable on the battery, any battery catalog will list your battery by application

and the required cca`s. the alternator should be putting out about

14.6 volts. and using a test light check for shorts while the car sits overnight. disconect the negative cable and put the testlight

between the post and bat. cable. the light shouldn`t lite. open the door to turn on the dome lights and it should light. these are the charging system basics and you should be able to pin point your problem hope this helpsI have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?A bad battery will kill a good alternator, and also if you are testing the alternator on the car running, a bad battery will show that the alternator is bad. A bad starter will kill both the alternator and the battery. All three components make up the starting/charging system. Any one of those components will throw off testing overall if any component is tested on the car. My answer: pull the battery out and have it tested by itself. If it tests bad, that's prolly all your problem was, but you need to replace the batt. and test the alt on the car. If it's good, pull the alt off and have it tested. The results of that second test will tell you if its the starter. honestly it sounds like your alt. and batt are decent, but your starter/cable connections/or something else in your car (bigger stereo) is pulling constant or too much juice. If the alt is not putting out enough juice to run everything in the car and still have some left to keep the batt. fully charged you'd be getting the problem you have. But normally if the alt is going bad, the amount of time it takes to drain the batt should be getting progressively shorter plus in the latter stages, your car won't start anymore and your batt. will be bad. A few of the most common problems leading to %26quot;undercharging%26quot; the batt. is a weak alternator (or bad diode), bad ground connections (which could be any electrical device in the car), or a bigger stereo (which robs the alt. of needed power to charger the batt. properly)I have a 2000 Mercury Mystique with a 2.0 liter engine and am wondering if the battery is too small?Check your fuses for an alternator fuse. May solve the whole problem. Most auto supplies can test your alternator. Only take s a minute to take a voltage reading.

HELP pl0x?you dont have to change alternator all you will need is a powerfull capasitor cap this keeps from working the alternator hard and i belive helps the life of the battery you you do get one make sure it has a digital screen so you can read the volt readingsCHOSING SUBS... HELP pl0x?ur not gonna have to upgrade ur alternator with either of those amps. Im runnin 1500 rms rite now in my Jeep with the stock alternator and 3 caps and having no problems. Ur definitely gonna want an aftermarket deck. stock decks just dont have the tuning options that aftermarket deck have. ur gonna want more options with those subs than just %26quot;Bass up%26quot; and %26quot;Bass down%26quot;. and they make installation a lot easier. look into an alpine or pioneer deck

What all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?

i know how to hook the amp up and subs i just wanna know if i will have to change the alternator or the battery or if i can just get like a 100 farad capacitor to keep it from killing my alternator i wanna get this done cheap as possible but i don't wanna worry bout my electrical system later so thanks in advance for ur advice also i would like advice from someone in this field of work thanxWhat all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?Ignore lowhz.

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

    1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator

    2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery

    3. Upgrade the %26quot;Big 3%26quot; - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.box.net/shared/uchv4dbk88

You will need Microsoft Excel. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g

A second battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off.

A capacitor is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.

The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.

See my site for more info http://spkrbox1.spaces.live.comWhat all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?lowhz has not a clue to what he is talking about. You do not need 3 batteries just yet. First thing is to do the big 3 upgrade, high output alternator, then a yellow top optima. Then if you want to get more batteries look into Kinetic, since they are a reputable company. What all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?Well, what brand and model amp are you going to use? Need to make sure you are getting an actual 3200 rms.

If it is, caps are nowhere near what you need. You need 3 group 31 batteries and a single 250/300 amp alt. All 0 gauge wire. If you want more help, feel free to email me.

se_rdaudio@yahoo.comWhat all do i have to replace to install a massive car audio system 3200 watts rms/5500 watts peak(electrical)?if u get the right kinetic battery the only thing left is to beef up ur alt deep cycle is the key and the kinetic r the best. there expensive but upgrade ur primary and adding a secondary of this battery would be the best thing to do

Am i being rob by autoshop?

my car broke down on my way to work.my car just shut off and it wont start again so i called a shop that i always go to and they send me a tow truck.i left my car at the shop and later called me and tell me that i need to replace my alternator. i ask them how much it will cost me?and they said it will cost me $390.00 i was kind of shock that it cost that much to change the alternator so i told them not to do anything.i went back to the shop to get my car, i told them that i dont wanna get my car fix for now.but the guy still charge me 160 dollars for the tow and for checking the car which is i think too much.did they just over charge me?Am i being rob by autoshop? He probably charged you because you have the writing skills of a retarded third grader. Perhaps some basic English classes might help.

Hope this helps.Am i being rob by autoshop?Well some places are much more pricey than others, so if thats his fee then thats what you'll need to pay. Thats a shame. I bought a used alternator for 30 bucks and had it installed for 10.Am i being rob by autoshop? Were you overcharged? I can't tell from the information given.

How far was your car towed? How long did the mechanics work on the car to diagnose the problem?

What is the rate charged for shop time? How does the company compute towing charges?

Depending on circumstances $160.00 could be close to the average charge for the services provided.Am i being rob by autoshop?A tow usually runs for about 120-150. Sounds reasonable to me.

How long will my car last?

I have a 1990 Mazda Miata 1.6L engine Rwd with a manual transmission. My current mileage is ~258,000 and when i asked my mechanic few days ago why my engine loses a quart of oil every 4000 miles before my 5000 miles oil change accordingly to my owners manual. He said that my car is too old and its burning oil in which it made a lot of sense. My car however runs pretty good and starts right up at once in whatever weather conditions hot or cold. I always change my engine oil at every single interval and i have even given my car a tune up last year (2008). during the tune up, i replaced the spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter, and even changed my alternator and genuine mazda battery. There are absolutely NO fluid leaks under my car in which includes no engine oil, coolent, trans and diffential oil leaks under my car unless i use the air conditionor and there is water dripping down after use which is normal. My A/C system blows really cold too, my mechanic said a few days ago while servicing my A/C, the temperature of my A/C is, I think he said ~35-38 degrees. My car accelerates smoothly without any hesitation or stalls unless i let go of the clutch too early with out giving enough gas(thats normal though for a manual trans).

Anyways, I have always known in my whole entire life that japanese cars are long lasting and reliable. I just wanna know if my car's engine will completely break down causing me to buy a new car or a new engine which is very costly. I'm asking this because my car has extremely high mileage and i just want to know if it will be ok even past 300,000 on my odometer.

So, my last question is, do cars completely break down between ~280000-300000 miles or more? I'm just wondering and somewhat worried because i am planning on buying a new car under 20 grands in about year. I am also planning to sell my car then at a reasonable price on like ebay or any other website that can sell cars so i can make a downpayment of atleast $5000.

Thanks in Advanced! :)How long will my car last? You will never sell that car or trade it in and get more than $500 for it.

Unless it is using more then 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles you are perfectly fine.

Almost all car manufactures claim that 1 qt per 1,000 miles as exceptable oil usage.

As for how much longer will it last?

Let us know when it finally does die.

Take a pic of the odometer and post it on the web, I bet you see 400,000 miles. How long will my car last?Engine life varies but well maintained cars last much longer. You're burning oil due to engine wear...it's normal with that many miles. With 258K you have a good shot at 300. Good luck. With that many miles your Miata isn't worth anywhere near 5 grand..more like 1.How long will my car last?well a car can last forever or it can break down the next day...i have seen vehicles last over 1,000,000 miles or i have seen a brand new car need a new engine within 5000 miles...it all depends....you wont get 5k out of that car though...the best you could pry get is 1000 that is a good price to sell an older car for...it could be a great little 1st car for a teenager....you just dont know how long a car will last its all a gamble

Im building a new car Audio set up and I have a dual in dash dvd player radio with a 1800 watt mono block for my subs and a sony 4 channel amp to power my door speakers and tweeters right now I am running my stock alternator and a deep cycle motor under the hood. Im having my system professionally installed by a local shop and he says my charging system isn't going to be enough he said he would install a 2nd battery in my truck for about 150 bucks for the battery and install its a Kenitec battery the %26quot;cap killer' I was wondering if my stock alternator cant handle whats under my hood how is it going to help by installing a 2nd battery then wouldn't neither of them give me enough power. im just curious to know and suggestion would be nice but i dint want to change my alternator unless its Absolute necessaryElectrical system for car audio?I would definitley recommend getting a better alternator before gettin a %26quot;cap killer%26quot;... How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?

I need to change my alternator, but my hood wont open. I thought the cable may be broke, but its not. I tried taking the fender off, but I can't, because I have to open the hood for that. I can get it up far enough, to stick my fingers in there and move the latch that %26quot;should%26quot; open the hood. It does nothing though. So its caught on something and I dont know what. It feels like its caught on the latch though. So, now I can't open my hood because I can't get my fender off and I can't get my fender off because I can't open my hood and I can't change my alternator, because I can't do either of the other two things.

Any help, other then completely tearing off my fender or take it to a mechanic that will over-charge me and probably not know what they are doing anyway? How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?if you are talking about the lever you pull up on under the hood to pop it... that is a secondary latch that just keeps the hood down in case the primary fails, the cable is attached to the primary. You will need to get to the latch assembly not the lever under the hood. I have never dealt with this on a honda (yet) but it happened on my truck and I had to drop the bumper to make room so I could get leverage, my guess is you will have to do the same, the hood does not need to be open to remove the bumper. Once you drop the bumper you can lay down or kneel and reach up with some channel locks or something and pull on the cable AT the latching mechanism. Your bumper should only take about 30 minutes to drop, I dont know the year of your civic but on mine (88-91) all you would have to do is pull the front bumper blinkers and that would reveal the bolts that mount the bumper support on, before you loosen those be sure to remove the screws holding the plastic under fender guards on.

This is my best idea, perhaps you dont need to drop the bumper as long as you can get your arm up there with a tool and can get enough strength to break it loose. Good Luck!!How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?Try lubricating the latch with a spray lubricant, if you can get your finger in there, then you can get the little straw that attaches to the can in there too. If you're REALLY lucky then it's just stuck due to grit and lack of lubrication. More likely you'll be forced to take it to the mechanic. How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?Try removing the grille from your car. That will allow access to your hood latch. From there you might be able to pop the latch manually, or remove the latch assembly from the radiator support to allow the hood to open. Good Luck and Merry Christmas! How to open a hood on Honda Civic that wont open?Your cable may be stretched, and the pull-handle won't go far enough anymore. Grab the cable with a needlenose or something and pull.

Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???

Looking at buying a '95 Monte Carlo. 3.4L engine. Car has some slight body damage but nothing serious. Alternator is bad and needs to be replaced. Thermostat needs to be replaced and the starter is a little weak. How hard is it to change the alternator on this car??? Are there any major problems with these cars??? Would it be a good buy???Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???No... the 3.4 DOHC engine has decent power (think it's about 200) but it's a total lemon. Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???was a good car... alternator is not hard to replace but id have it tested first thremostat is not bad either.. depends on the price under a grand maybeIs '95 Monte Carlo a good car???Good maybe.

Great, no!Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???I have owned a '95 Monte Carlo Z34 for five years, and it now has 143k miles on it. It is lots of fun to drive, but the 3.4L V6 is a pain to work on. The front axle has to be pulled to change the alternator. The intake manifold has to be removed to change the rear spark plugs. I once had an oil leak at a little $1 o-ring, but to change the o-ring, the entire engine had to be pulled. My car has never left me stranded or anything, and I'm not afraid to take it on 4 or 5 hour trips. If the engine needs a lot of work, though, it might not be a good buy unless you are a skilled mechanic, or willing to put a lot of time and effort into it. If I were to sell my car, i would only expect $1500 or $2000 tops, with no mechanical problems or body damage. Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???I had a 95 lumina, which is basically the same car. It also had the 3.4L. I never had a problem with the car. It was a very solid and great car. I sold it to a family member. It has over 160,000 miles on it. Still original motor and tranny. Do not I repeat do not listen to Natalia. she is like a Honda and Toyota prostitute! Throwing her trash out there, and hoping someone will buy it. Natalia, come on get real. You and your 35year old toyota and 51year old honda comparisons. Like I have said in the past, show me a 51year old Honda on the road! Until then shut up and go answer all the repair questions on the foreign car categories. There is plenty of them. You and your post are worthless. Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???It's a good car, but like most any used car over 10 years old, it has been neglected by it's previous owner and will need some TLC.

Get the work done by a reputable mechanic, or if your capable and have at least some experience, yourself, and you'll have a great car.

Don't listen to Natalia........ Consumer Reports is great for dishwashers and refrigerators, but when it comes to CARS they are COMPLETE dumbasses........... And most TOYOTAS and HONDAS never even make it to 10 years old because they are cheaply built and either 1. they rust away, 2. break a timing belt and trashes the engine, or 3. is involved in a major accident due to broken ball joints.

To the next poster below.......... I replaced the starter in a 94 Cutlass Supreme 3.4 today (basically the same as a Monte Carlo Z34)....... and it's simple. Is '95 Monte Carlo a good car???I had a ’97 MC for a decade and just traded it in a few months ago. It was a great car for me, but I can tell it went downhill in terms of performance in the last year or so I had it. It had 131,000 miles on it. Maybe I could have driven it a few more years, but with its age and mileage, I was concerned I was going to start having expensive repairs.

Don’t buy this car without having a trusted mechanic look at it. My dad was a mechanic and he did virtually all of my maintenance for the first 8 years I had the car – which I believe is the reason it lasted as long as it did. You won’t know how well this car was cared for if it’s not checked out.

My older brother was a GM mechanic for years, and he frequently complained about how difficult it was to work on mid-90s GM cars because there was so much “junk” (his word) shoved into the steering column. Might be an issue for you with repairing your starter.

That Consumer Reports crap posted above is for the current generation of MCs, not the one you’re asking about.

    Car electrical problem?

my xenons work great while the car is off but as soon as i turn on the car they go crazy.....so im thinking it must be a power problem....when the car is off it runs on the battery but when its on it runs on a different power source maybe the alternator that gives little or too much power to the xenon....so how can i fix this problem???do i have to change my alternator???how can i add more power to the car????Car electrical problem?Your hooked up to the wrong power source. You need dedicated D/C supply at fuse panel. aux port. Or you will need a in line D/C Filter. You mite be too young to remember driving down the road with your dad and the am radio on and every time he took off from a stop light the radio would wind like the alternator? Most of the cars that did this were GMs. Car electrical problem? check all the ground wires from the battery cables to the grounds on the system. You can also check the alternator for too high a ac leak.

I'm thinking about changing pickups on my guitar. Any advice?

First and foremost know that this is the first guitar I ever owned. I've had it for more than ten years and I'm really sentimental. It's an Ibanez AX120 and is one of those really-quality-but-inexpensive guitars. I've recently thought about putting better pickups in to make it even better. Right now I have the standard Axis AH1 at the neck and AH2 at the bridge. If I swap out, I'm more than likely going with Gibson humbuckers (at least that style, anyway). There are several layers to my question:

    1) Are there any dangers in doing this? Do I risk really screwing up my %26quot;baby%26quot;? And by %26quot;screwing up%26quot; I mean both the performance of the guitar (risking electrical problems? Does the design of the guitar influence how a pickup will perform?) and the appearance of the guitar (I don't want it to end up looking like a tinkering high schooler got a hold of it).

    2) Is this easy enough to do on my own? I'm not a mechanic or luthier, but I'm no dummy either and would prefer to save the money if its difficulty may be equivalent to, say, changing an alternator in a car.

    3) I'm open to brand and product suggestions. What I have in mind is the standard Gibson Les Paul- or SG-style humbucker, in a silver/chrome plating. Actually . . . it has to be chrome or black in color, but that shouldn't be a problem to find. Any other brands I should look into for that style humbucker? (I'm not interested in single coil--I already have a telecaster for that).

    4) It appears that the two pickups on my guitar currently are slightly different (AH1 vs. AH2). Does this mean I need to buy two different kinds of pickups? Or can I just buy two of the same kind, and then their position on the guitar will make all the difference?I'm thinking about changing pickups on my guitar. Any advice?Okay, let's do this point-by-point.

    1) There are some dangers, as in everything else, but not many. You don't actually have to damage the guitar or the pickups to change them out. The only real risk is if you don't connect the wires properly, in which case it could suddenly lose the connection and go silent.

    2) It should be. All that really has to be done is to take off whatever cover in on your particular guitar (I'm not totally familiar with that model, but I think it's just the pickup ring?), pull the pickup out far enough to work with it, and either de-solder the pickups leads from the selector switch and ground or cut the wires. Then you put in you new pickups, either solder the leads where the old ones went or splice the wires (by twisting them together, soldering them, and covering the connection with electrical tape), and reattach the cover/pickup ring. If you don't have a soldering iron, and can't borrow or buy one, then this is probably not a good thing to do yourself.

    3) I recommend you check out seymourduncan.com. They have a section of their website called the tone comparison chart. Find humbuckers in the list, and look at the options. It will tell you the impedance of all their pickups models, and a simple tone guide. The impedance is how %26quot;hot%26quot; the pickups is; the higher it is the more output power the pickup has. As for the tone, each pickup will show a Bass/Middle/Treble chart. Very straightforward to compare. For example, I'm looking into getting a Duncan Distortion pickup, which has a readout of 7/8/9 by that chart, meaning it has strong highs, softer mids, and lower but still strong bass presence. See? So if you wanted, say, a lot of midrange, find one that says 5/8/7 or something. I don't know your preferred tone, but I usually recommend the Duncan JB for people who play clean to mid-gain, then Duncan Distortion to people who use a lot of distortion, and the Duncan Alternative 8 for people who use fuzz effects. DiMarzio also makes excellent pickups, but I don't know much about them, so I can't make any recommendations.

I think the chrome cover is actually a separate piece, so you can keep the ones you aleady have and just change the pickup under it, but I may be wrong about that.

    4) Usually, neck pickups have lower output, because a pickup closer to the middle of the string has more to pick up. But most of the tone difference you hear is because of the position relative to the string, so if you put two identical pickups in the bridge and neck positions, they aren't going to sound the same. Most pickups (including Gibsons and Duncans) come in a bridge version or a neck version, though.

I hope this helped. If you have any more questions you can reach me at zephirwynd@yahoo.com.

Any mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question?

I know a little about cars. I have changed timing belts alternator belts alternators etc... I need a new radiator for my car. I think i could probably save quite a bit of money to do it myself. Is this an extremely difficult task to accomplish? Also, anyone have an estimate of about how much a mechanic would charge? Thanks in advanceAny mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question?Depending on the car, if you've changed the things you've changed it shouldn't be hard. Have to take off the fan shroud, and fans. Upper and lower radiator hoses, two transmission cooling lines and hold down screws where ever they are on your car. Take out radiator and put new one in, Can save a bunch.

I supervised two twenty year old girls on a 2001 Neon and they did all the work.

Good luck.Any mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question?I'm not a mechanic, but I've changed a radiator before. It isn't that hard to do (depending on the car). You would save yourself a lot of money by doing it yourself. Be prepared to drain the coolant. Usually a upper and lower hose and transmission coolant lines (if your car has an automatic transmission). A few bolts. Front-wheel drive cars, you may have to remove the fans. The newer the car, the harder the job gets. Use your best judgment. It's not the easiest job, but its not rocket science either.Any mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question? It sure does help to state the Year, Make, and Model and preferably engine size in this section.Any mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question?most mechanics charge like 60$ per hr and its not that hard of a job, theres really nothin to it. its a easier than changing a timing beltAny mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question?not that hard.......btw in the US https://www.1800radiator.com/ is hard to beat on prices.......for the part.....but i would also tell u to check around locally

my wife's radiator cost 199 at auto-zone and advance and oreilly's but napa had it with same warranty for 139....and those buildings are literally next to each other in my town......

as for doing the work ir ur unsure buy haynes manual for ur car and follow directions its not hard.......Any mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question? If you can change a timing belt or alternator you surely can change out a radiator without any trouble. Just go for itAny mechanics on here or anyone that can answer a radiator question? Its pretty strait forward, Just remove the cover over the fan blade, disconnect the hoses and remove the bolts and slip it out, Do the reverse to put it back in, Now the most important thing is refilling the radiator, Just pouring it in will leave you air pockets ao to relieve this problem, jack up the front of the car just a little(this will allow the air pocket to vent themselves out), than start the engine, and slowly fill the radiator allowing time for it to go threw the motor and heater core(turn the heater on full blast by the way) you will notice alot of bubbling, Thats normal, even a little over flow is normal. Once the bubbling has stopped and the radiator is full lower the car and test drive for about ten minutes and check the levels again. Good luck

    1989 Mercury Tracer?

My belts are tight, but they do show dry rot How do I change the Alternator %26amp; Power Steering belts on a 1989 Mercury Tracer. Nobody will touch it %26amp; to take it to a shop they want $250.00 just to change the belts. (my cost $15.00 for the belts). Also, the Alternator needs to be changed- any tips on how to do that?

Thanks.1989 Mercury Tracer?Your best bet would be to get the Haynes manual for your car... it would be tough to give you step by step directions on here. You can get the manual at most any auto parts store... $15, and now you'll have it for any future projects.

    - Good Luck!1989 Mercury Tracer?I had one of those it sucked!!!1989 Mercury Tracer?Unless you have a good set of wrenches as well as a 1/2 inch drive socket set with the right sizes to fit the nuts and bolts, you can't do the job yourself. You will also need someone to lever the pump and alternator and hold it tight while you tighten the bolts. The job can be dangerous if you don't disconnect the battery properly and if it's required to get under a jacked up vehicle at any time. To get an idea of the cook book steps that would need to be followed for your car, go to the public library and read the Motors and Chilton's manuals for the repair. Also buy a http://www.haynes.com manual for your car.

The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?

i recently changed the alternator and had to disconnect my battery. after installing the new alternator i started the car and my gas gage was below e. it is stuck under the stop that it rests on when the car is off. when i start the car it springs up to the stop so it looks like the car is always out of gas. is there a way that i can fix this problem. i am not good with math and figuring out how much gas i have by way of how many miles i went is too much calculating. The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?You need to have it replaced. It sounds like it spun all the way around and ended up under the stop. Possible a tension spring has sprung inside the gauge. That means you may have to get a replacement cluster. Contact you local Chevy dealer to find out the proper procedures. Possible cost for a cluster? $200-$300? Plus the labor to remove and replace it---$90? Just giving ballpark figures so you know what you may be getting to.The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?honestly, you'd have to disassemble the cluster, open the gauge, and unstick it. (I know, not the answer you wanted)The gas dial on my 98 malibu is below the stop. how do i fix that.?the first answer you got is right.you can take a cluster out and remove the front lense.unstuck the needle.I did it a bunch of times on a malibu.

  • This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to "let you know."?

Here's what's wrong with my car...the thermostat gets stuck. My heater, and I say that loosly, blows cold air almost all the time. When I slow down it blows cold air, when I turn the amount of heat that is suppose to blow from low to high it blows cold air. It will blow slighly warm air only if I am going 60mph or greater and then only for a little while. May be 2 minutes. Then it blows cold again. Plus it doesn't blow very hard out of the vents. I was informed that it was the heating element. I'm guessing that the heating element and the heater core are the same thing? I can not afford to take it to a shop to fix and I do like to workon cars, I just don't have enough knowledge as to where and how to get to the heating element. I can take stuff off and put it back on that's not a problem. I have replaced alternators, changed spark plugs and I change my own oil. Plus I have put a starter on my dune buggie. So I'm not a complete idiot. But this heating element is getting the best of me.This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?Start by replacing your thermostat... if it's sticking... your coolant never stays in the engine block long enough to get any form of heat from it... and without hot coolant flowing through your heater core... the fan will just blow cold. Thermostat is cheap and easy... start there for sure. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?try putting a higher temp. thermostat in. then check your fresh air intake and make sure there are no leaves or debris blocking it. As for the heater core, get ready to tear your dash half out to get to it. What kind of car? This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?Like dr. deviance said, start with the easy cheap stuff like the thermostat. If its sticking thats a big part of why not not getting heat. And I was stating you could email me andlet me know all of this. What year, make and model is this car? This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?Before changing anything, backflush the heater core. I thought my problem was the thermostat also but after fiddling around I did the flush. Easy enough to do. Take the heater core lines off of the engine and flush it with a garden hose. If you are not sure which one is the inlet and outlet, put the garden to both lines. Especially if its the GM red coolant. That will crystalize and gel up in the heater core. If that doesnt do it, then I would change thermostat before the heater core. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?i say again...shop manual..15 dollars...pays 4 itself...over n over....step by step on every job u do.. lists what tools needed..no one sez element...heater core will get less laughs...before u do anything are you really really really sure its the core????.. change thermostate,,flush system...flush heater core both directions seperatly...[where hoses go into engine fire wall]. refill 50/50 coolant/water....check heat door is working... we need more mechanic girls..good luckThis is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?You can pick up a good clue about this by feeling the heater hoses for temperature. That will show if hot coolant is entering the cab.If the line is hot near the engine but cooler away from it,something isn't letting it flow.Another possibility is an air lock in the system which can happen if it's been opened for some reason.I'm sure you know this already, but to be sure the coolant level is right, take off the radiator cap with the engine cool and top off the radiator. The first thing that happens when the coolant is low will be the heater acting up as you describe. This is to Lunatic72... I have no idea how to %26quot;let you know.%26quot;?your heater core is fine as long as you don't see water leaking on the passenger side floor, forget about the heater core, you need to put a new thermostat in the engine and if it doesn't fix the problem you need to look at the heater controls and make sure the duct doors are opening properly.

1994 Honda Accord 5 speed turns and but shuts off soon after.?

my '94 Accord will turn on after i turn the ignition over so many times. it just clicks when i turn the key, eventually turning on. when its on, the rpm's will go so high, but will slowly drop until the car just shuts off altogether. and while its on, it will make a sort of broken putter.

i have had the battery charged twice in 3 weeks, and so im leaning toward the possibility of the alternator being the problem. if that is the case, how much would it be to have the alternator changed in a shop?

however, friends have suggested it either being the starter or a fuel pump.

    does anyone have any ideas?

thank you very much.1994 Honda Accord 5 speed turns and but shuts off soon after.?put a fuel pressure guage on the line and check the psi, also make sure ur gettign spark by grounding a spark plug to a ground on the car using a screw driver. My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?

The battery keeps dying out, and she has changed the alternator about 4 times and someone told her that it may be her computer chip. Does anyone know if it could be that? If so how much it would cost to replace. She also has replaced the battery several times and it was sitting for approx. 5 years and we bought a battery and it started right up. But the battery will only run for a minute. Thank You TracyMy friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?Don't ever buy a cheap battery, this is the main problem for most vehicles.

Yeah a cheap battery will work for a few weeks even months.

Then it's back to the same old problem.

I would try this first. Get a good battery with the most cranking amps you can get for your vehicle.

A well known name brand, not some name you never heard of.My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?If it starts right up and then the battery is the only thing keeping it running...Meaning the alternator is not charging it up.The voltage regulator may be bad. I would take it to a Napa , Advance auto parts or an Auto zone and get them to put their Charging system tester on it. They will diagnose it for free because they want you to by the part from them. If the computer is bad they can also put a scanner on it and tell you if there is a possible bad computer. they will also do that check for free also.

Since your truck is manufactured after 1996 they should have the OBD2 connector to check it with.My friend has a 1997 GMC Jimmy and she has had alot of problems with it so my question is?Oh good Lord, don't ever take your car to a parts store for service and diagnostics!! Yeah, ok, maybe for the battery or the alternator, but even then they try to sell you every little gadget part for putting in a new battery. They can tell you if your battery is dead, or your alternator is charging, but all they can tell you about your computer is if it has any diagnostic codes stored in it's memory. that's it. It is well known in the automotive community that GM alternators are not known for lasting the life a gm car. I know, I've put 4 on my gm car. The reason the battery keeps dying out is that there is probably a parasitic draw on it. Some electrical component is staying %26quot;awake%26quot; while the key is shut off. To determine if you have a parasitic draw on the battery, you need to disconnect the negative battery cable and install a parasitic test switch. This allows you to run the vehicle and operate all of the accessories and other electrical components in normal fashion, then open the switch and connect an ammeter to measure the current draw on the battery. It's better this way versus just disconnecting the battery and hooking up an ammeter in series because some electrical components will have a higher draw when the battery is first connected then when they power down, or go to sleep, the draw drops off. If you don't drive the vehicle after disconnecting the battery, some components may not effectively go to sleep. To determine the allowable parasitic draw on a battery, determine the reserve capacity of the battery and divide by 4. Example: a battery with a reserve capacity of 100 minutes will have an allowable parasitic draw of 25 miliamps. It is possible for a computer to draw excessive current and drain the battery. Typically, anything over 50 milliamps will draw a battery down over a week. You should take the vehicle to a reputable repair facility and have them test the entire electrical system. Load test the battery to determine the battery's state of charge, load test the alternator to determine if it is charging properly, perform a parasitic load test on the battery to check for unwanted current draw on the battery. Also check the battery cables for corrosion and high resistance, and loose connections. I know of several people who have had to replace the alternator many times on their vehicle. You can do like I did and buy an alternator that has a lifetime warranty against failure. This way if it fails again, you will only have to pay for labor to have it installed. On this vehicle, that is not very much because it is easily accessible.

Can anyone tell me how to change the water pump/alternator belt on a 1977 280z (datsun)?

Hello Miss Shelly.Since you are asking it seems that you are going to attempt this your self.I suggest U buy a repair manual(Chilton's or Haynes for about $16.00 @ most parts stores) Anyway if your Datsun only has one belt,it's as easy as loosening the alternator screw %26amp; the mounting screw.(at the bottom).

    Changing Generator to Alternator?

I have a 1962 model Zepher Zodiac, and I would like to know how do I go about changing my charging circuit from DC to AC. Thank you in advance.

If I can get diagrams or links i would gladly appreciate it.Changing Generator to Alternator? You can't charge a DC battery with AC. You have to convert(rectify) the AC to make DC, which charges the battery.

If your car isn't charging while idling, you need a different(better) alternator, or something else is going on. Somewhere(maybe in the alternator itself) you will have a rectification circuit which takes your AC and converts it to DC. Maybe one of the diodes is bad, making for a serious losses in energy in your DC circuit.

At any rate, if your car isn't charging sufficiently as-is, you're not going to get better performance by converting a faulty DC level back to AC, rectify it AGAIN and then charge your battery with it. You just introduced more losses by converting it AGAIN.Changing Generator to Alternator?my dear realtor:

in the houses is a lot better ac than dc.

not in cars ,my dear.Changing Generator to Alternator? The most common method is to install an one wire GM internal reg. alternator.

You can get one wire kits at auto parts stores to convert a regular 3 wire GM internal reg. alternator. ( 70s - 80s vintage stuff from any GM car engine )Changing Generator to Alternator?of course, the bigger question is WHY.

An alternator will produce AC current, but every single auto accessory known to man runs on DC.

Unless you plan to bring your household appliances into the back seat to plug in?

You can change the generator to an alternator, but meantime your distributor, brake lights, etc. all need DC so that Alternator usually has a built in converter to change it all back to DC anyway.

So... back to my original question.... why? If you need AC power for some reason, why not simply purchase an inverter and wire that into your system?

    Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?

    1) At high speeds (70mph+) the battery light comes on and the headlights dim. Same thing on quick accelerations. Let off the gas and things go back to normal. Has new battery as of last winter. My first thought was the alternator. I replaced it last year as well, but it's a junk yard alternator so you never know. I took it to Advanced Auto to have the charging/starting/battery checked. All came out 100%. Why is the light coming on?

I also changed the neg battery terminal. There was a power cable for an amp/subs on there at one time. That cable has since been removed, but the bigger terminal was still there. I replaced that today with a smaller one.

    2) Where the heck is the tensioner pulley on that car? I see two pulleys that look like it. One is right in the center of the motor, the other in towards the front but down low. The one in the center is impossible to get a socket one because the strut bracket is in the way. The other is down way too low to reach as well. How in the heck do I remove the belt so I can change the alternator if I can't find/loosen the tensioner pulley? Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?Sounds like a belt tensioner problem. Alternator is not that hard to do, I recently had to change mine on my ZX2, its easier to get to the bolts on bottom from underneath on the alternator though. Your problem could be as simple as a new belt is needed. If there is oil leaking on your belt , then that will cause it to slip as well. Here is a diagram of the belt , as they dont put one on the ZX2, and when you remove the belt, its hard to remember as its jammed in there.

    http://i517.photobucket.com/albums/u340/

and yes, it is impossible to get a socket on there, a open end wrench will do the trick. Two questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?sounds like the belt may be slipping, the tensioner is hard to access, the real trick to that particular belt replacement is the routing of the belt, make shure you have a diagram or draw a picture or make a mental note it has a funny routeTwo questions about a 2000 Escort ZX2 2.0L?And yet again marvin beats me to the punch but yes he is right. Altenator is at the back kind of a pain as marvin said and the tensioner is the one your thinking of use a wrench it will work its magic for you on loosening the tensioner. Or try a belt tool works greta for those tights spots, no pun intended

If you take the car to autozone or advanced they will check it for free. You can also take the alternator off and have them check it. You may also just have a bad connection when you last changed the alternator. Sometimes they can work themselves loose or a clip on the connector breaks. I would check the connections to the alternator first then pull it off and have it tested. That way you know if it is the alternator or wiring going to the alternator. If you have a big stereo installed then you need to get a higher amp alternator and caps for your stereo amp to keep from burning up the alternator again.1988 cadillac brougham runs but NO CHARGE light stays on?if alt was a cheap rebuilt all internal parts may not have been changed get it running check voltage output on battrry post should be over 13.6 v1988 cadillac brougham runs but NO CHARGE light stays on?The fusable link is in your Pos wire from your battery, follow it and you should come to a black heat shrinked area. As for the fuses, here's a link.....http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG

My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?

i got two amps, 4 components and a kicker 12, whenever i put them to sound very loud the lights goes like down with every beat, but today some guy on a car sound store told me that i need to buy a new car battery, a bigger one, because that might damage all the electrical system...

this is true?? then only with a battery will work? or i need to change the alternator to? or just leave that how it is??My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?battery isn't the problem. when the engine is running, the alternator supplies electrical power for the vehicle. yours, by the way, isn't putting out enough power. get a larger oneMy car lights go down when the sound its high?!?replacing the battery is the best option. but if your lights are only dipping a little then you cold purchase a capacitor from any car audio retailor. what it does is hen the sub hits and needs more power it takes it from the cap instead of the car and taking to much power. My car lights go down when the sound its high?!?it may be the wiring...

before buying a new battery or alternator, i would check all the wiring.

    check grounds, fuses, connections, etc.

its not worth it to find out its not the battery or alternator after paying for it.

  • Can I change a bad diode/diodes in my alternator?

My alternator has at least one bad diode. I need to fix it because it's an expensive high output alternator for a sound system. I need to know where I can get diodes and how to rebuild an alternator. Any info on special tools I might need or other special parts I might want to replace would be nice. Thank You.Can I change a bad diode/diodes in my alternator?yes you can do it and the parts stores can get the diodes for you but you will need a repair manual if you have never done it.Can I change a bad diode/diodes in my alternator? It would be better to change the entire voltage regulator it will be cheaper, The diodes are sealed in the regulator hope this helps. Can I change a bad diode/diodes in my alternator? Most auto parts stores will have a variety of repair kits and manuals that will guide you step by step. Also make sure the bearings/brushes are in good condition, if not replace them too.Can I change a bad diode/diodes in my alternator?First, how do you know its a diode? If you never did this before, take the whole alternator out of the vehicle and go to an auto electric shop and have them rebuild it. By the time you get the tools and skill required to properly diagnose and rebuild a failed alternator, you may find that you damaged the unit during the repair process. Let a pro do it..They do this all day long and know all the tricks. Ive had special units rebuilt for under $100 and it only took one day, besides they have all the parts and tools, you will use these only once or twice in a lifetime unless you plan to make this a business.

    Good Luck

    Help I broke my car?

I own a 1995 Nissan Maxima. Like an idiot, I tried to change my alternator by myself but I snapped in half the slack adjuster bolt for the serpentine belt in the process. How bad is this? Would I be able to drive 25 miles to the nearest mechanic? Would the belt fly off and cause more damage? The belt is tight right now. I did not get a chance to loosen it.Help I broke my car?Is the other half of the bolt stuck in the block? If the belt is tight enough it should make it to the shop. Since the bolt broke off in the block, there is a couple of ways to remove it. It can be drilled and tapped or their are some specialty bits that can bite into and unscrew it. If your unable to or don't want to attempt to remove it, a reputable shop should only charge you a couple hours worth of labor. Which depending on where you live will be a couple hundred bucks. This is just to get the broken bolt out. Once out, a new bolt and the old adjuster can go back on. If they tell you that they can't get it out and need a new block, I would go somewhere else. Also depending on how tight a fit it is, some components might have to be removed to get it out which will cost more labor hours and dollars.Help I broke my car?go to a mechanicHelp I broke my car?I wouldn't chance it. You'll end up on the side of road and who knows what damage you might cause in the attempt. Better call a tow.Help I broke my car?no I wouldnt drive it - sounds a bit risky and sorta stupid.Help I broke my car?As long as the belt is still tight and there is no way for the bolt to loosen then you are fine to drive it to your mechanic. If the belt comes off your car will simply shut down as the serpentine belt controls most all of your vital parts.Help I broke my car?Remove the belt, the battery will carry you for 25 miles.Help I broke my car?oooo that is a tough one. I wouldnt be surprised either way. maybe it will break, maybe it will hold. I say go for it. You can run your car without the alternator for a while, but the battery has to be pretty charged for you to do that, it will eventually go dead. Good luck.Help I broke my car?I had something similar happen several years ago, not a Nissan though, it was a Chrysler and the alternator belt broke. I drove it to the nearest garage, 30 miles away with no problems except that they had to recharge my battery after replacing the belt, so you might get by with removing the belt for a short distance. No Guarantees though since I don't know anything about Nissans.

    To Be A Car Mechanic?

Is there any free online manuals or sites i could read to learn how to do certain things on cars? Like if i want to change an alternator I could go to the %26quot;Change An Alternator%26quot; section? To Be A Car Mechanic?http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker

I now have boxes of manuals and auto repair manuals going back to the 40s. Hope you find what you are looking for. and good luck to you. The big 3 upgrade?

How hard is this upgrade? Is this upgrade capable of being done without going to a shop? I want to purchase a HO alternator from eBay from a reliable source which I've heard of called Irragi alternators. I know what the big three means and it requires the upgrade of the following three power/ground cables which are the power wiring from the battery to the alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis, and the ground strap to the engine/tranny to the chassis. How hard is it to change an alternator from a car and also the difficulty of upgrading the big 3?The big 3 upgrade? You can also just add to the existing factory wiring for the big 3 instead of replacing. Use the stock wires for the correct lengths needed for each.

Aternators only need a properly adjusted tension on the belt to work properly.

Difficulty is dependant on the design of the car.The big 3 upgrade?depending on the car it could be fairly easy or hard

How does a 'Single-Line Alternator' work, and is it necessarily beneficial?

I have one on my 67' Mustang and I have to screw in a connector to the battery terminal if I want to start it (I leave it unscrewed when not driving it for a while). It gets really hot and I'm pretty sure battery acid may be leaking. I'm wondering if I should change to a regular alternator. How does a 'Single-Line Alternator' work, and is it necessarily beneficial?A sinlge wire alternator, and a regular alternator are really the same thing. A %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator has the output wire and then another 2 wire plug. One of these is pulsed output that can actually be converted to drive a tach, and the other is the field activation wire. This typically runs up to a 10 amp (or so) fuse, and then to the ignition switch. Thus this only %26quot;activates%26quot; the alternator when the key is on.

To convert a %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator to a single wire alternator, you simply jump the field activation wire to the output wire (which has battery voltage).

The field activation does draw some current. If this vehicle is not a daily driver, then it will tend to discharge a battery. Just be advised that to convert to a %26quot;regular%26quot; alternator you must run a fused ignition voltage wire to the alternator (i.e. you can't just bolt it on and expect it to work).

My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?

I have a Toyota corolla station wagon 1990 and when I start the car it will work for about an hour until the battery is dead. I will recharge the battey the same thing will happen so I put in new the battery and a recondition alternator and the samething thing happens as before.

Is it the alternator not charging the battery? How about running a direct connection from the alternator to the battery? Is that possobile? Is there any device /modulator that it has to pass through before it reaches the battery?

Will a direct connection damage my battery and alternator? The recondition alternator has a 3 prong plug and two of the wires are slightly thicker than the one that was on the old alternator. The connecction I did was the same as the old oneMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?check your alternator and battery for loose cables. make sure the terminals on the battery properly secured and not able to slip.

for the alternator, check the cables and make sure each bolt is tightened to it's maximum. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Check to see if the batt has a dead cell (even though its new) and check if the alt is putting out. If u dont know how to do this or have a tester on hand go to ur local autoparts store and have them test it for you. If its no that u may have a short sumwhere draining ur batt. Also check ur grounds and make sure they are clean that causes probs also.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Well, I haven't really had much experience with Jap. Cars, but most modern vehicles will have a regulating swich soewhere between the alternator and the redirect cable. Also, Check the cables themselves. A faulty cable could mean that the full current is not getting back to the battery. Anyways, like i said, I am more familiar with American makes, But there should be some similarity. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?check the cables for any bare spots. might be grounding out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?sounds like a wiring problem, however, have that alternator checked. new just means new it doesnt necessarily mean good. if it is , in fact, good have a competent mechanic check it out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?i own a repair shop and the alternator is what regulates the voltage also on this one,it sounds like to me you have completely lost the ground wire from the body to the battery, and all its doing is running on battery voltage ,and not allowing the alternator to charge it back up,one thing you said that helped was it does this with both battery's and alternators ,so if i was you id be looking for a bad or loose ground wire from the body to the engine ,they have a lot of ground wires on them, and all of them are needed,i hope you find it,they can be hard to find when their doing this, good luck with it.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Alternator Voltage Regulator is probably bad. You can buy them at auto-part store. This part basically controls the output of the alternator. For example, when the battery is charged the regulator will restricted the amount of amperage from the alternator allowing just enough to keep the car running. Most new vehicle have the regulator built in to the alternator. In your case they are two separate parts.

You can test to see if the alternator is working by disconnecting on of the battery terminals while the car is running, if the alternator and the regulator is good the car should stay running. If it dies the one of them is bad. Sometimes there are problems with recondition parts, so the alternator could still be bad. I don't think it is you battery, if it was the car would not ever die as long as it is running. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?The first thing I would try is putting a volt meter on the battery while the car is running. The battery should run just above 12 volts not running and around 13 to 15 running. While the car is running, if it doesnt read 13 to 15 its your alternator. I have purchased new remaned ones that were still bad. I would also check battery connections, broken wires , and ground cable to frame connection. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?new does not mean good. replace the alternatorMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?allso check the fuse that goto the battery or retest alt it might be falty diodes or brushes

How can i fix or find a short in the electrical system?need info on how to troubleshoot an electrical problem ?

already changed battery and alternator. even when turned off it draws power.dies while runningHow can i fix or find a short in the electrical system?need info on how to troubleshoot an electrical problem ?If you don't have appropriate tools, including a good meter, you're best off taking it in to a shop.

If a car dies while running due to no voltage the charging system isn't doing what it should. Off hand I would suspect the new alternator; either if was defective or damaged on installation. Another possibility is that you have an external voltage regulator that is bad and not allowing the alternator to do it's job.

A good meter is best but even a $10.00 voltmeter from Radio Shack or an autoparts store will tell you if the alternator is putting +/- 14.6 Volts on the battery. If it isn't, ask an auto parts store if your vehicle uses an external voltage regulator; if it does, replace it.How can i fix or find a short in the electrical system?need info on how to troubleshoot an electrical problem ?Take the vehicle to an auto electrical shop.

  • How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? With spark plugs, normally your gas mileage starts to decline and when taking off, it is getting sluggish. Or you can always check them, if the gap is big and they are black and corroded. Normally change them every 15,000 miles, but check them first. Your alternator, well since it keeps your battery powered (generator), all the things that are run by your battery (lights, radio, other electrical devices). Lights seem dim or your car will hard to crank over other things such as that. How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? When the alternator is about to go out, your AC, radio, gears with go on and off, car will go in and out of gear like it's dying then coming back to life.

Spark plugs? It's hard to say. But they're cheap to replace and improve MPG, so do it every few years.

How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator?

on a 2004 grand am i haven't change them ever since i pruchase the car in 2005.How do you know when its time to change your spark plugs or alternator? Now would be a good time to change out your spark plugs. Every 3 years is rather standard.

Alternator on the other hand, That is one of those things you don't replace it unless its broken! So long as your battery is still charging its still working fine. Your alternator should last at least 10 more years.

    Is my alternator dead?

hey i have a 91 acura gs. Sometimes when i don't start it for two days, it doesn't want to start anymore (unless i use a jump cable), and when i start it and don't move for too long (stand still), the battery seems to become weak, and the car dies (then i need to jump cable it to restart). If i drive, it seems that my car works fine. could it be my alternator? or my battery? but the thing is that i changed my alternator and my battery 7 months ago. i know that sometime that alternator can be defective. 7 months ago, when i changed my alternator, one of my friend did it for me, so i just bought the alternator. i was wondering how much it will cost me it i take it too a garage if the cause of the problem is the alternator. tks for any helps. Is my alternator dead?IT IS NOT UR BATTERY....ITS EITHER UR ALTERNATOR OR UR BATTERY TERMINALS ARE CORRODED

CHECK THE TERMINALS FIRST AND IF THEY ARE JUST GET THEM CLEANED BUT IF NOT IT IS UR ALTERNATORIs my alternator dead?to check the alternator pull the positive terminal off with it running if the car stalls the alt is bad. if not its working. sounds like the battery is shot and if you've run it dead enough times that's probably why. it should still be under warranty after only 7 months take it back they should test it and replace it if it's bad for free. also check and clean all the terminal connections on the battery and alt.Is my alternator dead?you need to take the alternator to the auto parts store. they will check it for free. also take your battery. and you can decide from there what you will need.Is my alternator dead?Probably the battery..

Take it to almost any auto parts

store or Wal Mart and they will

test both the battery and alternator

for free...Is my alternator dead?yep sounds like the alternator also check ur battery cables and grounds. Is my alternator dead? It's a crappy battery. Is my alternator dead?First make sure your connections are tight and clean. A battery brush costs a few dollars at a parts store, use it to clean the terminals and posts to shiny metal.

Use a multimeter to check the voltage before you start it, it should be around or slightly over 12v. A cheap multimeter can be had at Wal -Mart for $20.

After starting the car, the alternator should be charging the battery at 14.5 volts or pretty close to that. If it's only charging at 12 volts, it is a defective alternator, or voltage regulator. It could also be a poor connection.

Drive the car with the meter hooked up to the cigarette lighter port. (Get help for this one) If the car isn't charging but suddenly kicks in while driving then either the alternator is bad or the circuit that activates the alternator is bad.

DO NOT test the system by disconnecting the battery cable with the car running! This worked in 1955 when cars had generators instead of alternators. On a modern car you stand a good chance of frying your computer and costing yourself a lot more money.

Many places will test your charging for free, but remember that they profit from a car that needs repair, so be cautious.

My alternator just died on my 2003 Vette. The past couple of days it has rained pretty hard here in southern california. My battery was diminishing little by little this past month and today it finally died while at the gas station.

I don't have the time or desire to take it into the shop let alone I don't want to pay out cash for something I can do myself. Being late on a sunday, my resources were limited. Can someone walk me through the removal of the serpentine belt so that I can remove the alternator. I would really appreciated it.CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?your gonna love this belt system. locate tensioner, remove tension.that simple.just start looking, its an idler pulley with a springloaded arm.CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?first off should be 1/2 socket/wrench, grad a breaker bar your gonna need it. (although not to hard without, will make it a lot easier on you), the tensioner is going to be located below the alternator but above the crankshaft, bolt will rotate clockwise to release the tension. and you should be set to go...a little word of advice, i dont know how often you use the vehicle, or how hard you drive it, but if your getting around 10,000 might be just as easy to replace it while you have it off?

I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?

I JUST REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR BUT IT WONę©³ RUN. THE BATTERY DIED ON ME AND IT SEEMED AS THOUGH IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BASED ON HOW OLD IT WAS SO I STARTED THERE. AFTER A FEW DAYS IT STARTED TO REPEAT HAVING A HARD TIME STARTING NEEDING A JUMP TO START SO I MADE THE NEXT MOVE TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR. WITH THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED AND ALL CONNECTIONS TO THE ALTERNATOR CLEANED, CONNECTIONS RESTORED IN CORRECT LOCATIONS AND CORRECT BELT TENSION I CANNOT GET IT TO STAY RUNNING. THE ENGINE TURNS OVER AND SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO RUN BUT DIES WITHIN ABOUT 2 SECONDS. I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND TESTED THE VOLTAGE MAKING SURE IT GOT A FULL CHARGE BUT IT STILL WONę©³ GO. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CLAMPS FOR THE BATTERY POSTS ARE A LITTLE COROADED SO THOSE ARE GETTING REPLACED ASAP AS WELL AS REPLACING THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR. ALSO, IT WONT START OFF OF A JUMP START... ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?Voltage regulator is a possibility, it may not be allowing enough voltage through.

A weak condenser can certainly cause it to not run correctly, as can worn out points. They're usually sold as a set, so replace both at the same time.

Another item that can cause it to start and not keep running is the ignition ballast.

What's a ballast? you might be asking. It's a part of the points type ignition system that reduces the voltage to the coil to about 9 volts. Many had a bypass that allowed the full 12v to the coil during start-up for easier starts, some were temperature controlled where they allowed a full 12v to the coil, then once they started to warm up, the voltage would decrease, and they can get very hot.

The ballast will be mounted to the firewall, on my '65, it was near the center on the driver's side. It will be a ceramic block with a metal bracket to hold it onto the firewall, and a terminal on each side, one from the battery, and one to the coil. It should be easy to follow the wires to see where each one goes. You can test the ballast with a voltmeter to see if it's allowing voltage through, or an ohmmeter to see if it's reading a certain amount of ohms, or an open circuit. An open circuit means it's broken, of course, and needs replacing, if it allows anywhere from about 8v to 12v, it should be okay.

You'll probably need to learn how to set the points yourself since there's not too many technicians who know how to do that anymore (I've known a few who had never even heard of points before). Here's a link to an article explaining how on Allpar.com http://www.allpar.com/fix/points.htmlI just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?less typing in caps and more buying a newer car.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?sorta limited on info but 1966 new yorker im sure still has a points ignition system. these can be very picky to get right. i would take the dist cap off and sand the points or replace them (they're cheap). you will need to set them with a fealer guage.. good luck hope this helps

This might sound crazy but connect one side of your positive jumper cables to the connection on the starter and ground the negative side, then connect the other ends to your battery and try to start it. If it starts then it has to be the battery's ground or the connection to the starter.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?If your '66 still has the original points and condensor distributor you may have a bad condensor and a bad condensor will perform as you have stated, poor running right up to the point of not starting at all. Or it's possible the points have slipped and are closed, gap between .014 - .019 ( I believe were the specs).

    Chrysler Corp. replaced the old distributor for just that reason, reliability.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?Check your points for burning and pitting, better yet, replace them and the condenser. Also could be the ignition ballast resistor. A symptom of a bad resistor is that the engine will start but as soon as you let go of the key, it dies. Check it with an ohmmeter. A bad one will read very high resistance, or infinity. It's mounted on the firewall, about 2-3 inches long, half inch thick, looks like a white crayon with a wire coming off each end. Chrysler products of the this vintage were notorious for burning these resistors out. Lots of owners used to carry a spare in their glovebox.I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?Like mark b said. voltage regulator. black box on the firewall 4%26quot;x4%26quot;
